When you place a backorder, Unstoppable Domains doesn't charge you upfront. Instead, we extend you an overdraft limit — a line of credit that covers the cost of any domains you successfully catch. This article explains how that limit is calculated and what it means for your account.
How your overdraft limit is calculated
Your overdraft limit is based on the number of .com domains you own through Unstoppable Domains:
Overdraft limit = number of .com domains owned × $5, up to a maximum of $2,000
For example:
- 10 .com domains → $50 overdraft limit
- 100 .com domains → $500 overdraft limit
- 500+ .com domains → $2,000 overdraft limit (cap)
Your .com portfolio acts as collateral. The more domains you have registered with us, the more trust we extend.
Domainer Club members
If you're a Domainer Club member, you always have a minimum overdraft of $500, even if you own no .com domains through UD. Your limit will be whichever is higher — $500 or the portfolio-based calculation above.
Users with no .com domains
If you don't own any .com domains through Unstoppable Domains and are not a Domainer Club member, no overdraft is available. You'll need a cleared Account Balance before you can place backorders.
Holds vs. debts — what's the difference?
When you place a backorder, a hold is placed on your Account Balance. This is not a charge — it's a reservation that ensures we can collect if your backorder is successful.
- Hold (pending backorder): The domain hasn't been caught yet. No money has left your account. The hold will be released if the backorder misses.
- Debt (successful catch): The domain was caught and the cost is debited from your Account Balance. If this brings your balance below zero, you have 7 days to settle up before action is taken on your account.
Holds and debts may look similar in your Account Balance page, but they have very different implications. A hold has no deadline — a debt does.
Frequently asked questions
Can I place multiple backorders at once?
Yes, as long as the combined cost of all potential catches doesn't exceed your overdraft limit.
What happens if I catch more domains than my overdraft covers?
The catch will still go through, but you'll need to pay back the negative balance within 7 days to avoid account action.
How do I increase my overdraft limit?
Register or transfer more .com domains to your Unstoppable Domains account. Your limit updates automatically based on your current .com portfolio.
Does this apply to auctions too?
Yes. The same overdraft system applies to auction wins. See How Expired Auctions Work for more detail.
